The Legislature should immediately rewrite the indoor smoking cigarettes ban. Bars and taverns closed and people were put out of work when the draconian, vague smoking cigarettes ban was passed. Plus, the millions of tourists and conventioneers who spent millions in Las Vegas every year to eat, drink and smoke cigarettes in a dining atmosphere were denied that right.
Once the law is revised to accommodate the smoker, many bars and taverns may choose to remain totally nonsmoking cigarettes and cater to the nonsmoking cigarettes public, but there are other bars and taverns that would choose to cater to the smoking cigarettes public, who include locals and tourists along with the tens of thousands of conventioneers who used to spend large amounts of money in Las Vegas.
The children card has no place here. Bars and taverns are for adults only and any reasonable adult can make up his or her mind whether to dine and smoke cigarettes in a smoker-friendly establishment. A sign or advertisement is clear warning to any nonsmoker.
Anti-smoking cigarettes advocates are upset that legislators are considering allowing smoking cigarettes in bars and taverns. But remember, the original intent of the law was not to penalize taverns and bars. Employees don't need some nanny to look out for them. Waiters, waitresses and bartenders are adults and they can decide whether they want to work around smokers.
Smokers should have places to go, too.
I would bet that if the law again allows a person to dine and smoke cigarettes in a tavern or bar, there will be a revitalization and economic upturn in Nevada. And it's about time.
Choice, fairness, equality and freedom are the watch words.
